Wake Up, America!

“Erwache, Deutschland!” was the rallying call of the National Socialist German Workers Party, the NSDAP, the Nazis. The party was German nationalist, but it actually represented wealthy industrialists such as Thyssen, Krupp, and Vogler, rather than the worker, and it was hardly socialist, rather, as in the case in Italy, fascist. It melded the interests of industrial power with those of the state. Rather than state regulated business and industry, we saw nationalization of corporations, unifying them with government. As in Italy, where parliament had been replaced by representatives of corporations, the separation between corporate and state interests blurred into sameness. It is unnecessary to recite the history of Western Europe from 1939 to 1945. Those memories are burned into the consciousness of every living human. Of course, there are those who would seek to re-write this history. It is too revealing.

How ironic, that the rallying cry of a generation which fought the Nazis should be “Wake up America!” How ironic, and how predictable, for the same tactics used by little Adolf and the boys are being deployed in the US. “….Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist,” declared Lutheran Pastor Martin Niemoller, who narrowly survived Dachau. This relates to the present with one word, ‘Wisconsin.’

Rather than persecute Jews, the present scapegoat is the immigrant, labeled the ‘illegal alien’, who, more often than not, has committed no real crime. The US has open borders with Mexico and Canada. People cross these borders freely every day. Remaining past the expiration date of a visa, or even without obtaining a visa, would be tantamount to jaywalking. Rather than hurting neighborhoods, the immigrant commonly purchases run down or abandoned property and improves it, increasing the resale of adjacent properties in the surrounding area. If employment is secured with a forged Social Security number, these being hard physical labor positions which employers find difficult to fill, FICA is still deducted from the paycheck, as is income tax. The undocumented worker just doesn’t receive any Social Security benefits. Money paid into the system remains in the system.

Yes, wake up, America! Wake up to the tactics of the new brown shirts, the TEA party. Look beyond the vitriolic rhetoric, the frenzy of intolerance. As for ‘Christian values’, one of their favorite slogans, remember that on the belt buckle of the Nazi Wehrmacht, adjoining the malevolent eagle and swastika, were the words, “Gott mit Uns!”

About Stefan Jacke

MagicRobert presented me with a vellum document, composed in an insane script. We were in a well secured vault in the Michener Library. His face exploded into a broad smile, as he saw me recognize the words, "That government governs best which governs least." It was a copy of "On Civil Disobedience" in the author's own hand. The experience called to mind a conversation Henry David Thoreau had with Ralph Waldo Emerson, as Thoreau sat in a jail cell, incarcerated for protesting the Mexican War. Emerson asked, "David, what are you doing in there?" Thoreau responded, "The point is, Ralph, what are you doing out there?" Once, long ago, I jumped off of big red trucks, lifted weights, and cleaned toilets for a living. Then I wrestled drunks, ran around in circles, and got splattered with blood and all manner of body fluids for a living. Now I enjoy the stillness of early morning in my rocking chair on the porch, with a hot cup of coffee, trying in vain to forget the past. Thank you, Robert!
